Is Bush Overextending His Power?
07.27.06 (7:53 am)   [edit]

Senator Arlen Specter (R-Penn.) introduced legislation on Wednesday to challenge President Bush's insistence that he can bypass sections of bills that he signs into law.  The American Bar Association claims President Bush has violated the Constitutional oath by issuing hundreds of "signing statements" to disregard selected provisions of the laws that Congress passed and he signed.  Judiciary Committee Chairman Specter's bill would empower Congress to bring federal court lawsuits to test the constitutionality of Bush's signing statements.  The ABA asserts that signing statements cannot be a substitute for a presidential veto and that such an assertion of presidential power amounts to a line-item veto, which the Supreme Court already has ruled unconstitutional.

In America, the Constitution is the supreme law of the land meaning that nothing can be higher than the document of law written by our founding fathers.  It looks to me like President Bush is trying to undermind our constitution.  No person in America is above the law, not even the President.  If proven without a reason of doudt that he performed these line item vetos or signing statements, he needs to be treated like any other person who broke the law in America.  These legislations need to be reformulated so they can be resigned or vetoed to go back to the senate for a 2/3rds vote.  I'm not trying to bash the President here but he of all people should know the laws he must abide by.  This isn't even a democrat versuses republican issue.  This is an issue of legality only.  It simply is unconstitutional for a president to do this kind of thing.  Supreme Court ruled in 1998 that the president cannot pick and chose what parts of a bill he likes and veto the rest.  He needs to face some sort of penality for his actions if proven guilty.

Also, Alan Colmes is a "liberal" not a leftist. You're a leftist-- liberal is a word that used to be used by hippies to describe those who wouldnt take a position, it serves no one now except for the right wing who have hijacked it, along with "values" and "freedom". The left wing owns no rhetoric and these fake democrats like Joe Lieberman--who screws the democrats--has got to go.

So if anyone steps out of line from the what the democratic party is programmed to think then they are "fake"? Typical. I suppose all of you are supposed to march in unison behind Howard Dean? You know, the guy who bashes the republicans for being "divisive" just after he's compared someone to Stalin. Do you see him for the embarassment he is, or are you a mindless drone?
More to the point...I would say that no one is above the law ESPECIALLY the president. Considering the ridiculous pork attached to many bills, you'd think the line item veto would be very useful but it obviously would give the president too much power. I agree that the president should be held accountable if he is violated any law. Let's not have two presidents in a row get away with it.

What are you talking about programmed to say? I am my own person and I have my own voice and opinions. Just so happens my opinions coinside with the views of the left, just how yours coinside with the right. If my opinions are formulated copied then so are yours. What I say comes straight out of my own head and is my own beliefs. I model them after no one. I don't agree with everything the democratic party says. I'm against their view on abortion. Another thing is I never said Pres. Clinton was innocent. You just must have assumed I think that because I'm a liberal and that is where you are wrong. Your party is not the only one that is original, ours is too. This is just like conservatives though. When they feel threatened, they love to make attacks to the left instead of making valid points and acutally having an honest debate. It makes them feel higher up when actually it exposes them for what they really are.
