Pilot Locked Out of His Own Cockpit
09.01.06 (7:32 am)   [edit]

An Air Canada Jazz pilot who left the cockpit of his passenger jet to use a back washroom moments before landing found himself locked out upon his return.  The pilot eventually busted into the cockpit and safely landed the Bombardier CRJ-100, but not before alarming some 50 passengers who watched him bang on the door and talk frantically with the cockpit through an onboard telephone for several minutes.  The first officer had remained on the flight deck, but was unable to open the jammed door, forcing the crew to remove it from its hinges with only 30 minutes remaining in the flight from Ottawa to Winnipeg.

I'm really glad the pilot was able to get back into the airplane to land it safely but this opens up the door to some security questions.  If this pilot is able to break into the cockpit, what is stopping terrorist of doing the same and using the plane as a weapon.  I know all the planes have to have a locked cockpit, but what is a locked cockpit if you can easily take it off its hinges?  I really hope that terrorist don't wise up to this and try this method to harm many Americans like they did in the past.

On the one hand you are correct with thinking that the cockpit shouldn't be so easy to unlock on the outside; however, we should be thankful it was some what easy for the pilot to open. Otherwise all of those passengers would have died from the pilot not being able to land his own plane.

You do make a very good point but like I said above, if a pilot can do it, what is really stopping a terrorist from doing it.

Where is the co-pilot? Seems, to me, that someone should be in the cockpit at all times. This guy broke procedures, I would guess.

I beileve we should allow a pilot to be trained and armed to use deadly weapons. Maybe that would be a deterrant to would-be terrorists.

Ok I really just wanted to drop a note and say hi. I haven't commented in awhile, damn law school work yeesh, but thought I'd add a little note. Where do we draw the line between taking reasonable mesaures for safety and letting it rule our lives? I guess I'm just tired of worring about security and safety...I don't want my life ruled by it or dictated by it. Where is this stemming from? Orientation week for law school we went to court house in downtown Buffalo, NY. A judge was leaving the court house escorted by a police officer. I just thought it was so sad our society has come to this where even our judges must be escorted to there cars. When will the violence and the hatred stop? When will compassion and understanding override terror and security? Probabaly never happen right? Just so tired of it all...
