Young Girl Questioned for Threats Made to the President
10.16.06 (7:21 am)   [edit]

Julia Wilson, 14, got a surprise visit from two Secret Service agents at her high school after the words "Kill Bush" appeared on her MySpace.com web page.  Julia was pulled out of her biology class to answer why she posted a cartoonish photo-collage of a knife stabbing the hand of the president under the words "Kill Bush" on her personal MYSpace page.  Julia was questioned by two Secret Service agents without her parents present, which is raising some controversy.  First Amendment lawyers question whether Secret Service over-reacted to her comment.

Well first of all, if you happen to search the internet for the words "Kill Bush", you will probably get a link to my web page.  I wonder if Secret Service will come and pay me a visit.  Trust me, if they do you will be the first to hear about it.  This would make quite a post to my blog don't you think?

Now about Julia Wilson's situation.  I don't have a problem with Secret Service agents checking out threats made to our president.  I may not agree with the president and may not approve of the job he is doing, but I definitely do not believe he should be assassinated.  What I do have a problem with, however, is when the Secret Service pulls a 14 year old girl out of her high school class room and accuses her of wanting to kill the president because of a cartoon drawing on her web page.  I also don't like the fact that she was questioned without her parents present.  How big of a threat could this young girl really be to national security?  This is just another example of our government chasing around fellow Americans and ignoring those who are really threats to our country.

Yes, I do agree with you. Julia probably just did that cuz she thought it was cool or something. I don't think any 14 year old girl who barely knows about politics would want to kill the president. It's amusing, isn't it? These people doing all the unneccessary jobs and forget their bigger purposes.

I think the secret service obviously blew it this time. Now if she had been a Muslim male, about 20 years of age, in the states on a visa... But, I believe profiling is sensible.

I believe profiling is somewhat sensible as long as it is not overdone. I think profiling should be done just to let known non-terrorist go about their business and not be bothered. Just like in this case with young Julia. Another case is there is no need to intensively search 80 year old grandparents in airports.

You nailed it on this one, too, Fruge. I think it went too far when the SS pulled Julia out of her classroom to question her *without her parents present* and if it had been my kid, the would not hear the end of it. I'd probably be dragged away to the paddywagon, mouth stuffed with a rag soaked in chloroform, never to be heard from again. I mean, really, it's getting pretty hairy hearing that the SS hasn't anything better to do then hunt down a 14 y.o. girl and tterrorrize her by yoking her out of class. When you think about, what guarantee was given to the school that the ID's the SS showed them was legit? I just *love* how well our children are being protected these days.
