As you state, many schools have banned these sorts of games due to injuries to the students playing and the innocent bystanders that get hurt by the students playing with no care or concern for playground safety. Every school has playground rules and certified staff assigned to recess duty, but often times, there is so much going on on the playground, it is hard to keep an eye on everything all at one time. For instance -- I am assigned a playground zone. Some kid trips and falls and is on the ground crying and I must tend to that one child while hundreds of others are around doing their thing. Once I go to the fallen kid (with a troop of kids following me) and start talking to him/her, I am missing other things going on in my zone: another kid gets hurt, or kids are fighting, or some kids are complaining another kid is not being nice or took something from them, you get the picture. It is busy and confusing and now I have a thick gathering of kids all around me that I can no longer really see my zone! Most schools have one school nurse for several hundred students. The school nurse not only nurses but also is an administrator in most schools responsible for recordkeeping and clerical work. This is a lot of work. Some schools have even stopped allowing the kids to play in the am when they get off the bus because the school nurse is not on duty yet. Another game banned because of too many broken bones, sprains, and strains is Red Rover. We just got a new playground at school. The first week of school, some kid was not using the equipment properly, fell and broke his arm. Because of that, the new piece of equipment was removed from the playground ruining it for so many others. Some parents let their kids do anything at home, so they thing they can do the same at school and don't even think about putting everyone else at risk. I do not miss recess duty at all. posted by: tfruge1 (reply) post date: 10.18.06 (11:43 am) Reply to: inkspector You make great points here. Understaffing is a major problem in schools like this but the problem is should schools really hire staff just to guard playgrounds? I don't think this will solve anything. The only way to keep every student safe on the playground would be have a person assigned to each and every kid and that just isn't plausible. It is a shame that recess can't be what it used to be but because of the world we live in today, it just can't be. Nobody wants to take responsibility for anything anymore and parents are too quick to blame the school systems for their own mistakes. I think banning potentially harmful activities at recess is just something we are going to have to get used to as a society. posted by: irishred (reply) post date: 10.18.06 (12:16 pm) This is what America has become. Litigation has changed our society beyond comprehension. This country continues its slide into the abyss of ridiculosity (my new word.) posted by: lorischuster (reply) post date: 10.18.06 (5:12 pm) What's different is not that kids get hurt...but that parents feel the need to sue. What in the hell is wrong with people? I'm not going to even get started because I'll end up writing a novella and popping a blood vessel. Besides...Irish said it best...pure ridiculosity. posted by: Bloggers Home Page (reply) post date: 10.18.06 (5:28 pm) Thanks for your blog on Bloggers Home Page. NO PLAYGROUND means no future as kids cannot develop creativeness. PLEASE blame on parents as they WANT the best but dont know anything. posted by: tfruge1 (reply) post date: 10.19.06 (8:42 am) Reply to: LadyG I would have to agree with you. It really is a shame. Everyone is too quick to sue everybody because no one wants to take responsibility for their own actions. posted by: Chuba (reply) post date: 10.20.06 (7:20 am) I agree about the parents being to blame. Parents are entirely too quick to sue and cause trouble when it comes to their "precious babies." When I was in middle school we all had our little games. Some guys would play touch football and some would play basketball. I feel the teachers need to take some responsibility too. When the guys would play ball, the teachers would supervise and when it got too rough she would put an end to the game. I wonder what the schools are going to ban next? Basketball can be just as rough. I've seen kids get broken noses from playing basketball all b/c an elbow was flung up the wrong way. How about simply running around the play ground? Kids are clumsy, I know I was. When I was little, I was running and tripped on something and scrapped my arm up. Where will the banning end. Kids already hate school; this is the little part of the day they look forward to, besides lunch. That's it, pack them in with nasty unhealthy food then take away the exercise. And people wonder why kids are all obese. |
