Pelosi's 100 Hour Plan
11.08.06 (5:51 pm)   [edit]

With the elections over and the Democrats the victor, America clearly voted to send America toward a new direction.  They decided that a change of power is needed in order to get things done in this country.  The question on everybody's minds at this moment has to be what exactly are the Democrats planning on doing.

The new Speaker of House, Nanci Pelosi, recently came up with her 100 hour plan.  In this plan lists what she and the Democrats will first do in their first days in power.

On the top of the 100 hour plan list is to raise the current minimum wage from $5.15 to $7.25 per hour.  Democrats tried to raise the minimum wage during the past few Congressional sessions but failed every time.  This time around I imagine there will be different results.  President Bush already said that he is planning on working with Speaker Pelosi and the rest of the Democrats on a minimum wage increase bill.  I think this bill is a definite must for America and is time that the wage gets an increase.

Next atop the list is to put new rules in place to break the link between lobbyists and legislation.  From past Congressional sessions, lobbyists have played a huge part in deciding what gets passes and what doesn't.  A bill of this sort would really put the law making power back in the hands of the American people.  This would open the eyes of our law makers to see what needs to be done instead of listening to persuasive lobbyists.

Another issue on this list is to enact all the recommendations made by the commission that investigated the terrorist attacks of 9/11.  Included in the recommendations of the extremely lengthy 9/11 Report are ways to make American more secure as a nation, venerabilities in our nation security, and ways to prevent future terrorist attacks against the United States.  I cannot see anyone who would be against re-opening the 9/11 Report and listening to these recommendations.

The last key issue on the 100 hour plan is to cut the interest rate on student loans.  I am currently a college student, and I have my fair share of student loans built up.  I and many other poor college students would love to see this interest rate decrease.  This would ultimately put money back in our pockets that wouldn't have been available, and this would allow more money to be put back into our economy.  I see this as a win in every direction.

I foresee this Congressional session to be one for the record books.  After the last showing of Congress, I doubt Congress can accomplish any less.  We all have high hopes in our newly elected Congress, and lets all just wait and see all that will get done.  I have a good feeling we will be in for a great next two years.

I don't support the Democrats not the least Recpublicans. I need someone who can give good logical reasons for things happening atleast to some extent.

Fruge, I get a kick out of your new kick-ass logo! Boy, what a sea change, huh? I'm really proud of Americans today. We can rise to the occasion - and I believe we have a mandate. Enough is Enough - and We're Not Going to take it (fill in the blank____________) Anymore! It'll be interesting to see how things shake out from here on in. It's good that SoH Pelosi has a good plan going in, and if the Dems want to *stay* in power next election cycle, they best turn their ears to us and keep a good distance from lobbyists. Good to hear Pelosi plans on lowering rates on student loans, it's far past due.

You've done a great job providing us with the important issues of this election and info on the candidates, Fruge, and I thank you for that. Now, off to celebrate!

Commontater, I've had that kicking-ass logo on my mind all day - it really is terrific. As for celebration, I'm ecstatic, except it all feels so unfamiliar. Keep having to pinch myself ...

Said to Nursing faculty colleagues today that I'm newly hopeful that schools of nursing and other health care delivery exertions will be have renewed hope for the future of healthcare in this country. Boy do I hope I'm not disappointed.

Then there's the matter of justice brought to the run-up-to and execution-of this war in Iraq. I maintain crimes were commited against this nation ... investigations/hearings *must* be initiated and thoughtfully managed. There's no way out but through the way of real intelligence - information - THE TRUTH. - Andrea

Yah, that kicking ass logo is the b*mb and I want one, too. Let's start a Kick-Ass Club ;>
I was pretty pleased with the election results, but I *do* have some reservations, like, will there be another end-run around 2nd Amendment rights and will SoH Pelosi stick to pre-election promise not to bring charges/impeach Bush or other wrong-doers if she became SoH, when, in fact, it would indicate to me that she's not interested in holding anyone accountable for the mess we find ourselves in. Not good. Our politicians need to start fearing consequences again for wrong-doing; we've had too many years in which incompetence, crime & corruption has been rewarded with promotions, higher jobs, and turning the other cheek - with statements declaring they won't step down or resign. What's up with that? That's what despots and dictators of other countries do.. Do we need to March on Washington and drag them out into the streets and put them in stockades ourselves? But I think you're correct to say we need justice and *truth* - not sweeping it under the rug.

Now, another thing bothers me. I think replacing SoD Rumsfeld with another CIA, inner-circle fella like Bob Gates is a poor choice. He's done some questionable things in the past and we don't need CIA running foreign policy. JMHO, YMMV.

Yes, yes and YES.

Pelosi and even Rangle have shown timidity of conviction (I'm thinking of their shameless backing away from Chavez's pointed if somewhat comical remarks comparing Bush to Satan.) I too remember vividly and with satisfaction Pelosi's stated intention to pursue impeachment - I'm so hungry for hearings I can barely sit still!

Folks I speak with seem to believe that Rumsfeld's now free and clear of accountability for misbehavior, because of his resignation. Really? The entire administration's "above the law" M.O. is a protection against hearings? Like you, I ask many times a day, "What's up with that?!"

I'm sincerely hopeful, Pelosi'll swing back to the will of the populous as easily as she backpedalled from impeachment. Then though, she'll have to contend with Rahm Immanuel(sp?) who's wonderful, but tenaciously disinterested in impeachment.

Watch John Conyers!!

Yeah, please can we raise minimum wage, already? I'm not paying enough for milk and bread and socks yet. Come on, fruge. I give you credit for being unusually intelligent for someone of your political slant. Raising the minimum wage accomplishes nothing but make the cost of everything you have to buy go up. How does Wal-Mart get that extra $1 an hour to pay its cashiers? They're going to pass it on to its customers is how. In the end, rasing the minimum wage is a wash becase while it puts more money in your pocket, it also makes you take more money out of your pockt. I'm tired of all these people bitching about "not being able to raise a family on minimum wage." My friend, you shouldn't be trying to raise a family if your job skills will only get you a job that pays $5.15. I'm a relatively unskilled worker, I've been a bank teller, an aircraft mechanic's helper, a data entry clerk, a lifeguard, a customer service rep, a human resources assistant. I haven't worked for minimum wage in 15 years.

I do agree with you on lobbying though. I cited an article I read in one of my blogs on this a couple of days ago. Go check it out and see what you think. Part of the reason Republicans got bounced is because, in the end, they proved no less corrupt or out of the pocket of "special interests" than the Democrats they replaced some 10 years ago.
