I have lights on at a set time. I also do not use other lights at that time so I trade off in a sense and I use no more power than usual.

That is a good trade off Ink. It's nice to know that you think about these things. I wish more people would be more understanding.

this blog has totally went off the deep end. I can't believe people wasted their time messing with this. memo to idiot memo idiot There is plenty of other wastie practices that people to stop. Hey I got an idea, why dont you use the city transit system to go to work. it runs right by your apt. and goes near your work. if you truly cared about this issue, the electricity bill wouldn't be as high. so quit blowing smoke up our butts retard.

I think your post is very interesting & useful indeed for many people. Keep it up. Thank you for reminding!
By the way, I'd like to say Happy Christmas to you & your family.

This is baloney (bologna?). The average cost to run a lighted Christmas tree four hours a day for the entire month of December is about $3. Maybe double that for outside lights. Hell, quadruple that and say it costs $40.00 a month. Most people will waste that much in gas during the month making those extra runs to the mall (especially if you're going to sit in traffic getting to the Mall of Louisiana.) Let's cut out Christmas shopping while we're at it. Which is a bigger pollution concern? The guy down the street who's house is lit up like an airport, or that mom who makes a run to the mall every weekend to do a little shopping?

Lets not even get started with the Mall of Louisiana. I hate that place with a passion.

The only point I was really trying to make was that every little bit to not waste our precious natural resources would be greatly appreciated with all the world. Three dollars per person can greatly add up quick when you actually think about how many people put up lights.

Three dollars per family, not person. Yes, it can add up.

MY POINT was that that those extra trips to the mall amount to a larger amount and, thus, add up even faster.

Look, I applaud you for being so optimistic. As a hunter/outdoorsman/conservationist, I believe in everyone "doing their part" to protect our environment. But it's naive to think that discouraging people from using Christmas lights or, hell, even changing their driving habits is going to make a difference. Encouraging corporations and businesses (by far the largest consumers of energy and producers of pollution) to change THEIR habits will be cause for FAR more change than fussing at me for putting Christmas lights on my house four weeks out of the year.
